As the baddies stream tirelessly towards your encampment, I can't help hearing that "the ants go marching one by one/hoorah, hoorah" song in my head. EDU-SOFT.EU's Towers of Lumnia is a tower defense game with some goofy flavor, decent graphics, and complex and engaging gameplay.
Your spirit guide is the great inventor Umai - apparently also a great horticulturalist, since his plants take precedence over lending too active of a helping hand. Still, it's from him you'll learn the ways of the various towers that will shoot, stun, and blast away Lord Samur's henchmen before they reach the doors of your refuge. The word "malefic" is used several times, which is a big plus.
Each of four distinct territories is composed of five unique levels, each presenting their own series of evil challenges. A story mode leads you through them to defeat Lord Samur, or play in skirmish mode just to hack and slash demons to your heart's content.
